the preventive system had begun to percolate in Don Bosco’s heart. At once distraught and optimistic, Don Bosco said to Fr. Joseph Caffasso, “Wouldn’t it be better if these boys had a friend outside of prison to prevent them from going there… a friend to help them become upright citizens and good Christians?” Don Bosco becomes that friend. He teaches the boys the very trades he had learned as a boy. This became one of the means by which he equipped these boys for meaningful, respectful engagement in society by doing skilled labour and earning an honest living, an expression of their dignity as beloved children of God… honest citizens and good Christians.
