During this year 2024, the Salesian Family commemorates the 200th anniversary of a very significant dream that profoundly influenced the life and thinking of young John Bosco when he was nine years of age. The central theme guiding the Strenna for the Salesian Family this year, actually revolves around this dream. The dream, narrated by Don Bosco himself in 1875, portrays a meadow filled with troubled boys fighting and swearing at each other. A beautiful Lady of august appearance, our Blessed Mother, instructs little John how best to intervene among these wayward youngsters after She is given to him by Jesus as guide and teacher. Jesus Himself also appears to Johnny Bosco in this important dream. Eventually this dream became an epitome of what his work would be through the Salesian Congregation he founded in 1859. Reflecting on the dream, it becomes evident that it served as a source of unshakeable faith for Don Bosco enabling him to overcome many obstacles and achieve success through his God-given mission. Indeed the dream was a prophecy which unfolded throughout his life and ministry, guiding him through various challenges and victories. Only at the end of his life, in 1887, as he celebrated mass on the altar of the Guardian Angel at Sacro Cuor Basilica in Rome, did it all become chrystal clear to him.
